Whether you are just starting your orthodontic journey or a few months into straightening your smile, you have probably wondered whether chewing gum is still an option. It is such a routine habit for many people that the thought of giving it up can feel like a bigger deal than it sounds. The truth is, the answer depends entirely on the type of orthodontic treatment you choose, and there is much more to it than a simple yes or no.
At Clemente Orthodontics, this is one of the questions our team hears regularly, and it is completely valid. As a multigenerational family practice proudly serving the Bergen and Rockland County communities since the 1970s, we have guided over 8,000 patients through braces treatment and Invisalign®. Understanding what your hardware and teeth need throughout that process is key to setting yourself up for lasting results.
Gum and Braces: Why It Is Not Recommended
With traditional braces, chewing gum is generally off the table, and for good reason. Gum is sticky by nature, and that stickiness poses a real threat to the brackets and wires carefully positioned on your teeth. Once gum clings to your brackets, it becomes extremely difficult to remove without tugging at the hardware, and that force can loosen or damage the brackets or cause the wires to shift out of alignment.
Even sugar-free gum does not get a pass when you have braces. The problem here is the texture, not the sugar content. Repeated chewing of any gum puts you at risk of broken brackets, which not only cause irritation inside your mouth but can also set your treatment timeline back and require an unscheduled visit to our office. Staying on top of your oral hygiene while wearing braces is already a daily effort without introducing a sticky complication into the mix.
Gum and Invisalign®: The Key Rule to Know
Invisalign® comes with far more flexibility for your eating and chewing habits, but there is one rule that can’t be skipped: you must take your aligners out before chewing gum. Your aligners are designed to be removed before you eat or drink anything other than water, and gum is no different. Chewing gum with your trays in will cause the gum to stick to the plastic, warp the fit, and make them difficult to clean properly.
Once your aligners are out, however, you are free to enjoy gum just like you normally would. This is part of what makes Invisalign® such a popular choice for patients who want more freedom in their daily routine. There is also an interesting practical benefit for chewing gum. A 2023 systematic review published in the European Journal of Medical Research found that sugar-free gum can be a non-invasive, low-cost method for reducing discomfort during orthodontic treatment. For Invisalign® patients, that means a stick of sugar-free gum during aligner-free moments may provide a small but useful bit of relief from any soreness.
Other Eating Habits Worth Building
Gum is just one piece of the bigger picture when it comes to eating well during orthodontic treatment. Building strong daily habits around what you consume can protect your hardware, preserve your enamel, and keep your treatment on schedule. A few general habits to keep in mind include:
- Avoiding sticky, chewy, or hard foods while wearing traditional braces
- Removing your Invisalign® aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water
- Brushing your teeth and cleaning your aligners before reinserting them after meals
- Limiting sugary snacks and beverages to reduce your risk of staining and cavities
Small, consistent choices like these can have a big impact on your overall experience and final results. For a more in-depth look at what to eat and avoid during orthodontic treatment, our team is always available to guide you through the details.
