Top view flat lay backgroundStarting orthodontic treatment is one of the most rewarding decisions you can make for your long-term oral health, but it does come with a learning curve, especially at mealtimes. Whether you’ve just had brackets bonded to your teeth or you’re a few months in, knowing what to eat and what to skip can make a real difference in how smoothly your treatment progresses. The right dietary choices protect your appliances, reduce discomfort, and help keep your treatment timeline on track.

At Clemente Orthodontics, a multigenerational family practice proudly serving Bergen and Rockland County communities since the 1970s, we guide every patient through this journey with personalized care. Whether you’re undergoing traditional braces or another orthodontic appliance, understanding how your diet impacts your treatment will set you up for the best possible results. Dr. Michael, Dr. Nicole, and Dr. Marissa Clemente bring generations of combined expertise to help patients of all ages navigate their treatment confidently.

Foods That Are Safe (and Even Encouraged) During Treatment

Your options are broader than you might expect. While some adjustments are necessary, there’s still a wide range of satisfying, nutritious foods to enjoy throughout your treatment. Soft, gentle-on-your-appliances choices are your best friends during this time.

Soft Fruits and Vegetables

Bananas, berries, peaches, mangoes, and seedless grapes are all excellent choices because they provide vitamins and antioxidants without stressing brackets or wires. For vegetables, steamed or roasted options like carrots, broccoli, and sweet potatoes are ideal. Cooking vegetables until tender removes the risk of snapping a wire that raw, crunchy versions can pose.

Dairy, Proteins, and Grains

Dairy products like yogurt, soft cheeses, and cottage cheese are not only braces-friendly but also great for strengthening enamel thanks to their calcium content. Eggs, soft fish, tender chicken, and legumes provide protein without requiring excessive chewing. Grains like pasta, rice, oatmeal, soft bread, and pancakes round out a comfortable and filling diet. These foods provide the nutrients your body needs to support the bone and tissue changes happening throughout your orthodontic treatment.

Foods to Avoid During Orthodontic Treatment

Some foods can damage brackets, bend wires, or get lodged in hard-to-reach places; all of which can lead to discomfort and additional office visits. The following categories of foods are best avoided while wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances:

  • Hard and crunchy foods: Nuts, hard candies, ice, raw carrots, popcorn, and hard pizza crusts can snap wires or dislodge brackets with surprising ease.
  • Sticky and chewy foods: Caramel, taffy, gummy candies, and chewy granola bars cling to brackets and are nearly impossible to clean off completely.
  • Sugary beverages and foods: Sodas, energy drinks, and excessive sweets increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, both of which are harder to manage when you have brackets on your teeth.
  • Foods that require biting with the front teeth: Corn on the cob, whole apples, and crusty baguettes, put undue pressure on the front brackets that are most vulnerable to damage.

A good rule of thumb: if a food requires significant force to bite into or has a texture that could tangle in the brackets, it’s worth skipping or modifying.

What Happens if You Damage Your Braces?

Even with the best precautions, accidents happen. If a wire pops out of place or a bracket loosens, it’s important to contact your orthodontist as soon as possible rather than attempting a fix at home. Delays in addressing broken braces can interrupt tooth movement and extend treatment time. At Clemente Orthodontics, we make it easy to reach our team and get any issues resolved quickly so your progress stays on track.

For patients using clear aligners like Invisalign®, dietary rules are different; aligners are removed before eating, which means you can enjoy a wider range of foods. However, it’s still essential to brush before reinserting trays and to avoid sugary drinks while wearing them to prevent decay.
