If you’ve ever looked in the mirror mid-treatment and wondered what each piece of your braces is actually doing, you’re not alone. Braces are a carefully engineered system, and every component plays a specific role in moving your teeth toward a healthier, more aligned position.
At Clemente Orthodontics, we treat patients across Bergen County and Rockland County from our offices in Woodcliff Lake, Ridgewood, and New City. With over 50 years of experience and three generations of orthodontists, we’ve guided thousands of patients through braces treatment and understand the questions that come up along the way. Knowing what each part does can make the process feel a lot less mysterious and a lot more manageable.
The Main Players in a Braces System
Braces work as a team. Each component has a job, and together they apply controlled, consistent pressure to move teeth gradually into their ideal positions.
Brackets
Brackets are the small rectangular pieces bonded directly to the front of each tooth using a dental adhesive. Think of them as anchors, fixed reference points that hold everything else in place. They don’t move teeth on their own, but they act as guides that direct where and how the wire delivers force. Brackets come in metal and ceramic varieties. Metal brackets are the most common and durable option, while ceramic brackets are tooth-colored and offer a more subtle look.
Archwires
The archwire is the thin wire that runs through every bracket from one side of your mouth to the other. This is the workhorse of the system. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, modern archwires often incorporate shape memory technology, meaning they’re designed to return to their original form after being bent, which allows them to apply consistent pressure as your teeth respond to treatment. Early in treatment, orthodontists typically use thinner, more flexible wires to begin alignment. As treatment progresses, thicker, stiffer wires refine the position and help coordinate the bite.
Ligatures
Ligatures are the small ties that hold the archwire into each bracket. They come in two forms: tiny elastic rings (the ones you get to pick colors for) and thin metal wire ties. Their job is simple but critical: keep the wire seated properly in the bracket slot so force is transferred where it needs to go.
What About Bands?
You may have heard of orthodontic bands, which are metal rings that wrap around back molars. While some practices use these to anchor the archwire or attach other appliances, we do not use circumferential bands around the teeth at Clemente Orthodontics. Our orthodontists avoid them primarily because of the potential for damage to gum tissue that can come with banding. This is part of a broader commitment to treatment approaches that prioritize the health of the surrounding structures, not just tooth movement.
The Role of Elastics
Orthodontic elastics are rubber bands that attach between the upper and lower brackets, typically hooking between a top canine and a bottom molar. They apply force across the jaws to correct bite problems, including overbites and underbites. Elastics are removable, but they only work when they’re being worn. Your compliance with wearing them directly affects how smoothly treatment progresses.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what each component addresses:
- Brackets: anchor points bonded to teeth that guide wire-driven movement
- Archwires: the main source of force, directing teeth into alignment over time
- Ligatures: small ties that hold the archwire in place within each bracket
- Elastics: removable rubber bands that help correct bite alignment between upper and lower teeth
Every adjustment appointment is a chance for us to evaluate how your teeth are responding and fine-tune the system. Understanding the stages of orthodontic treatment can also help set clear expectations for what each phase involves. If a bracket comes loose or a wire shifts, know that we’re always here to help you address it promptly. A broken bracket or wire is rarely an emergency, but it does need attention, so treatment stays on track.
