Starting orthodontic treatment is one of the best decisions you can make for your smile, but there’s an adjustment period that comes with it. Whether you’ve just gotten braces or switched to a new set of Invisalign® trays, some soreness in the days that follow is completely normal. Your teeth are moving, and that process takes effort.
At Clemente Orthodontics, we’ve helped thousands of patients through every stage of treatment across our three locations in New City, Woodcliff Lake, and Ridgewood. Led by Dr. Michael Clemente and his daughters Dr. Dani, Dr. Nicole and Dr. Marissa Clemente, our team brings decades of hands-on experience to every appointment. Our orthodontic services are designed to keep you informed and supported from your first consultation through your final results, and helping you manage your day-to-day experience is a big part of that.
Why Does Discomfort Happen During Orthodontic Treatment?
When your appliances apply pressure to your teeth, the surrounding bone and tissue begin to respond. That response is what allows movement to happen, but it can also cause tenderness, especially in the first few days after a wire adjustment or a new set of Invisalign® trays. The soreness is typically at its highest during this initial window and fades as your mouth adapts. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, experiencing soreness after adjustments is a normal part of the process and is not a sign that something has gone wrong.
It’s also worth knowing that the level of soreness varies from person to person. Some patients feel mild pressure, while others are more sensitive. Neither experience is unusual, and there are some simple ways to make the adjustment period easier.
What Can You Do at Home to Feel Better?
Most discomfort during treatment responds well to simple approaches you can take on your own. The following options tend to be the most effective for patients in both braces and Invisalign®:
- Over-the-counter pain relievers: Ibuprofen or acetaminophen, taken as directed, can reduce soreness in the first day or two after an adjustment.
- Soft foods: Sticking to yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and pasta takes pressure off tender teeth and makes eating more comfortable.
- Saltwater rinses: Dissolving about a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinsing for 30 seconds soothes tender gum tissue and helps reduce mild inflammation.
These remedies are easy to work into your routine and can make a significant difference during the first few days with new trays or after a wire tightening appointment.
How to Handle Irritation from Braces
For patients in braces, friction from brackets or wires rubbing against the inside of the cheeks or lips is common early in treatment. Orthodontic wax is the go-to solution. A small piece pressed over a bracket or wire creates a smooth barrier, giving the area a chance to adjust without continued irritation.
If a wire is causing persistent discomfort that wax doesn’t fully address, reach out to our team. Our broken braces page also covers what to do when something feels out of place between appointments. Most minor issues can be handled quickly without requiring a full visit.
Tips Specific to Invisalign®
Invisalign® patients experience pressure differently than those in braces, but it’s still very real. Each new set of trays shifts your teeth slightly, and the first couple of days are typically the most noticeable. Switching to a new tray at night before bed is a simple strategy that many patients find helpful, allowing the initial adjustment to happen while they sleep.
Staying consistent with your wear time also matters. Removing your Invisalign® trays too often can slow tooth movement and make the overall experience more uncomfortable over time. If something doesn’t feel right with a new set, let us know at your next appointment or give us a call.
When to Call Our Office
Most soreness resolves on its own within a few days. That said, there are times when it makes sense to call us. Sharp or persistent pain that doesn’t ease up, a wire causing significant irritation despite using wax, or anything that feels sudden and severe are all good reasons to contact our team. The same goes for a loose bracket or an appliance that seems out of place. Once treatment wraps up, staying consistent with your retainer is the next step, and we’ll walk you through that transition as well.
