Orthodontists remove braces by using a special tool to gently detach the brackets from your teeth. They then remove any adhesive left behind with a polishing instrument. The process is painless but may cause mild pressure or discomfort. The entire procedure typically takes about 30-60 minutes.
Braces Removal Process
Braces removal is very easy and nothing to fear! As we mentioned in our previous blog, the brackets were glued onto your teeth with a special orthodontic cement. In order to remove the braces, the bond between the teeth and the brackets needs to be gently broken. This is done by your orthodontist using a special tool called a bracket removing plier.
The orthodontist uses this plier to apply gentle pressure to the bracket and break the bond between the tooth and the bracket. The cement is much weaker than the tooth structure, so there is no risk of damaging the tooth if proper home care and hygiene were followed throughout your treatment.
After the brackets are removed, there may be some residual cement left on the tooth. The orthodontist will either scrape off the cement or use a high-speed handpiece to polish off the remaining cement. This handpiece sounds a lot like a dental drill, but we promise that it is gentle and pain free.
Can You Remove Braces Glue at Home?
It is not recommended to remove braces glue at home. Dental adhesive is tough and requires professional tools to remove safely without damaging enamel. Attempting to scrape or dissolve it at home can harm your teeth. Visit a dentist or orthodontist for proper removal and polishing of the adhesive.
Can You Remove Cement from Teeth at Home?
It is best to have dental cement removed by a professional. Dentists use specialized tools like scalers and dental burs to safely remove cement without damaging enamel. Attempting to remove it at home can lead to tooth damage. If necessary, try brushing and flossing, but avoid sharp tools.
Can You Remove Braces at Home?
No, you should not remove braces at home. Orthodontists use specialized tools to safely remove braces and adhesive. Attempting to remove them yourself can result in damaged teeth, pain, infections, and wasted money. Always consult a professional to avoid serious dental risks and ensure proper care.
Will another orthodontist remove my braces?
Yes, another orthodontist can remove your braces, even if they did not install them. You may need to sign a release form and pay a fee. It’s common to switch orthodontists during treatment, and the new orthodontist will assess your progress before continuing or adjusting your treatment plan.
Can You Get Your Braces Removed Early?
Braces can be removed early if your teeth have responded well to treatment and your orthodontist approves. However, removing them prematurely can lead to incomplete results, teeth misalignment, or relapse. Always consult your orthodontist before considering early removal to avoid complications and ensure the best outcome.
Do Orthodontists Clean Teeth After Braces?
Orthodontists polish teeth to remove adhesive after braces, but they do not perform full dental cleanings. For thorough cleaning, including plaque and stain removal, patients should visit their dentist after braces are removed. Regular dental checkups are essential for maintaining oral health during and after orthodontic treatment
