Hawley Retainers
A very popular option for our patients, Hawley retainers are made of acrylic and metal wire. The wire sits in front of the patient’s teeth, while the acrylic piece sits behind the teeth. Hawley retainers can be used for either the top or bottom arch of the teeth, meaning the acrylic piece either sits on the roof of the mouth or immediately behind your bottom teeth. The wire sitting in front of the teeth is the primary piece responsible for keeping the teeth straight, maintaining the beautiful work your orthodontist and you have put into your smile.
Hawley retainers are removable, easy to clean, and you don’t have to adjust your diet to avoid damaging them. While some patients initially experience a lisp, this goes away relatively quickly after adjusting to the tool.
Vivera Retainers
Vivera retainers are removable and less visible than the Hawley option. Invisalign® specifically makes Vivera retainers feel less bulky than other options, ensuring a discreet and durable fit. These retainers are made of a long-lasting and transparent thermoplastic, which will feel very similar to Invisalign trays. Patients also receive multiple sets of the Vivera retainers, meaning they can stay prepared in case one breaks or gets lost.

Permanent Wire-Bonded Retainers

However, these retainers generally require patients to be very diligent about their oral hygiene. This is because the wires are cemented to your teeth and cannot be removed for easy cleaning.
